Magpie Mine is steeped in history and is one of the top Industrial Heritage Sites in Derbyshire, with a fascinating history of over 200 years.

There is an Agent’s House built in the 1840s now being used as a Field Centre of the Peak District Mines Historical Society, which is full of interesting artefacts for you to browse when it is open.

From the Cornish Engine House, Powder House and Horse Gin further away in the field, there is plenty to explore that will captivate your imagination… and don’t forget to take your camera as there is so much to photograph.

It is especially popular with photographers at sunrise and sunset. Although the site itself is flat and light pollution is visible, the starry nights and milky way are a spectacular sight during July and August.

A great outing from Combs Valley Campsite

Magpie Mine FlumeJust 15 miles from Combs Valley Campsite, it’s only a 30-minute drive, and you can pop down the road to Bakewell Town Centre (3 miles away) on your way back for a browse and a bite to eat.

The site has easy access over flat ground (although not ideal for wheelchairs) with roadside parking on Grin Low (sat nav postcode DE45 1QU).

Please note that all of the mine shafts have been capped for safety, although you can see down the 208 m deep hole of the main shaft that has iron bars covering it.
